€3m spent on foreign health treatments

The HSE spent 3.1 million euro on healthcare treatment abroad for Irish patients.

Under the EU’s Cross Border Health Care directive Irish citizens can receive medical care in mainland Europe and get those costs reimbursed.

However the scheme doesn’t cover travel expenses.

MEP Deirdre Clune says there isn’t enough awareness around the programme.
