Concerns about future of waste collection in rural areas

Members of the Nenagh Municipal District are calling of the Minister for Environment to examine the legislation around the collection of waste in rural areas.

Councillors from the area are to raise the issue at Tipperary County Council’s December meeting today.

The 9 elected representatives in the Nenagh area will today voice their concerns about the collection of waste in rural areas.

They say operators have struggled to provide a service in remote areas where large vehicles can’t gain access or where householders have very limited amounts of waste and lack storage space for bins.

With pay-by-weight charges set to be introduced next summer, waste service operators will be obliged to have equipment on their trucks to weigh each bin as it’s lifted.

This is seen as a major issue for smaller operators who might not have a sufficient number of customers to pay for such technology.

The Nenagh Municipal District councillors have tabled a motion for today’s county council meeting calling on the Environment Minister to review the legislation so that small operators could meet requirements of the pay by weight system by weighing their loads at the point of disposal.

The councillors say this would facilitate Tipperary householders as well as small waste companies, and reduce the likelihood of illegal dumping.
